Behavior Modification

I did the exercise to demonstrate how humans can create false memory. I read my friend two different lists of words, after each I had him write down all of the words that he could remember from the list on a piece of paper.

FIRST LIST                                                                         WORDS REMEMBERED
thread                                                              thread
pin                                                                    pin
eye                                                                   needle
injection                                                            injection
syringe                                                             knitting
sewing                                                              sewing
sharp                                                                hay stack
point                                                                 syringe
hurt
knitting
prick
thimble
haystack
pain

He made a false memory by writing down that "needle" was a word in the first list. This word corresponds with the topic of the other words in the list even though it was not stated, this is an example of false memory.
SECOND LIST                                        WORDS REMEMBERED
                    Bed                      Drowse                          bed
Awake                 Nurse                             drowsy
Tired                    Sick                                wake
Dream                 Lawyer                           awake
Wake                   Medicine                        surgeon
Snooze                Health                            clinic
Snore                   Hospital                          nurse
Rest                     Dentist                           hospital
Blanket                Physician                       rest
Doze                    Patient
Slumber               Stethoscope
Nap                      Curse
Peace                   Clinic
Yawn                    Surgeon
For this list he was able to recall both the first and the last words that were said. This demonstrates serial position effect which states that people are more likely to remember the first and last things they see/hear rather than the middle especially with a lot of information like this long list.
My friend thought it was kind of a tough task. You are read the list so fast that it is hard to remember everything that is said because your brain cannot focus for that long. I also tried this test and it was extremely difficult to remember a significant amount of words.

  1. Awesome job Kourtney! This experiment is super interesting to me because I already have a hard time remembering the stuff i need for school let alone the false memories that i don't need. I relate to your friend in that when you do this task your trying to go so fast that sometimes you miss a lot! Great job!

Brain and Behavior

The brain is such a vast and complex network and nerves that ultimately controls every movement that takes place in the human body. It amazes me how much we have learned about the brain in the past couple hundred years. Today we can see inside the bran as opposed to just looking at its exterior. In his TED talk, Carl Schoonover compares looking at the brain to looking at a computer. He says that yeah a computer screen looks cool and functions like it needs to but in order to actually see what makes things run you have to cut it open and look at the wiring on the inside. Chemical stains gave us the first look at brain wiring. It used to be where taking a brain out of a skull and looking at it under a microscope you would see nothing but grey matter. But now with new technology, you can stain the brains nerves before the brain is removed to see the patterns going on  inside the brain. This stain is called the golgi stain. Following the discovery of the stain, scientists were able...

Memory

MEMORY RELATED DISORDERS: -Memory disorders can range from mild to severe but all result from some kind of neurological damage to the structures of the brain, thus hindering the storage and recollection of memories. -Memories can be progressive like Alzheimer's or Huntington's, or immediate like those resulting from traumatic brain injury. -The most common disorders are effects of ageing. ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative and ultimately fatal brain disease in which cell connection in the brain are lost. It is the most common form of dementia and is generally diagnosed in patients over about 65. Th disease was first identified by  Alois Alzheimer as early as 1906, but was usually referred to as "senile dementia" and was considered a part of ageing, not an actual brain disease. The most common symptoms of AD are the inability to acquire new memories and difficulty recalling old ones. As the disease these symptoms ...

Personality Theories

Personality is made up of the characteristics that make someone unique such as thoughts feelings or behaviors. Research has shown that many external forces can influence the way that a personality is formed. One a persons personality is created there is little to no change throughout their life. So many people are interested in looking at how and why a certain personality is created that there is an entire branch of psychology dedicated to understanding it. A number of different psychologists including Sigmund Freud and Erik Erikson came up with theories that attempt to further understand personality and how it develops. There is a biological theory, psychodynamic theory and behavioral theory. - Biological Theory : Biological approaches state that genes control the way a personality develops within a person. This ties back to the nature-nurture debate I talked about last week leaning more toward the nature side of the debate. Biologists or any scientist for that matter tends to lea...
